The Restoration of All Saints Church, Tattersett

A Rural Norfolk Church

All Saints Church, Tattersett in Norfolk is a church with no running water, no electricity, but with a heritage scanning back 700 years; it has seen plague, pestilence, the reformation, civil war, lost several of its congregation in battle, and now needs help.

This is a unique “ At Risk” place for worship that we intend to restore.

Our initial target is to arrest the further dilapidation of the building and ensure the structural stability of the fabric. Once this has been achieved by addressing the external decay of the roof coverings, flashings and flint-work elevations, we will repair window tracery where necessary, install a rainwater system and ensure the integrity of the porch.

Internally, the state of the church looks very sad. There is evidence of water damage on the walls where roof flashings have failed, plaster has fallen away from the laths in patches of the chancel ceiling, and all the furniture has long lost its lustre. The important wall painting of St Erasmus losing his entrails has, over the last few years, decayed rapidly because of the damp conditions.

Our urgent task will be to attend to the stability of the chancel ceiling plaster, arrest the decay of the wall painting and decorations, as well as to feed the woodwork to restore its brilliance.

All work will employ the use of traditional and sustainable materials so to ensure the continuing place for the church in the community and its worship.
